For a number of years, French mathematicians have run regular number theory conferences to which they have invited number theorists from many countries. To repay their hospitality, the London Mathematical Society arranged for the 1980 'Journees Arithmeiques' to be held in Exeter. The papers published here are either based on the main invited lectures or on selected research talks given at the conference. They cover all branches of the subject: combinatorial and elementary methods; analytic number theory; transcendence theory; Galois module theory and algebraic number theory in general; elliptic curves and modular functions; local fields; additive number theory; Diophantine geometry, and uniform distribution. It will be necessary reading for all those undertaking research in number theory.

This volume contains 22 articles on topics of current interest in functional analysis, operator theory and related areas. Some of the papers have connections with complex function theory in one and several variables, probability theory and mathematical physics. Surveys of some areas of recent progress in functional analysis are given and related new results are presented. The topics covered in this volume supplement the discussion of modern functional analysis in the previous Proceedings volumes. Together with the previous volumes, the reader obtains a good impression of many aspects of pres

The papers in this volume derive from the Third Hamito-Semitic Congress, which took place in London in 1978. The papers, loosely grouped according to language families and theoretical issues, are in a number of cases considerably expanded and updated version of those presented at the conference. The papers in the earlier part of the volume tend to be more substantive and to present primary evidence, the subsequent ones focus more on specific issues within particular languages, are surveys of the field, or deal with questions of methodology. Together they provide an overview of the current stat
